For the past few weeks, I have buried myself in the Old Testament stories! And one of the stories that captured my imagination is the story of Jacob and Esau. In Genesis 27, When Isaac, the Father of Esau and Jacob, was old and his eyes were dim that he could not see, he asked His Older Son Esau to make him savory food to bless him since he thought his day of passing was coming close. Now Rebekah Isaac’s wife was listening and asked Jacob, their young son, to take the savory food before Esau so that he can claim the blessing. Jacob heeded his mother’s call, and he indeed deceitfully took away Esau’s blessing.
As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac when Esau came back with the savory food to seek the blessing. I was happy Esau was back, and my gut screamed, thank God! He is about to claim back His endorsement! Unfortunately, his father told him he had already given Jacob the blessing even after discovering he had deceived; he couldn’t claim it back.
That reminded me of the blessing that we carry in Ephesians 1. The bible says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved”.
In that Verse, we see that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing, and that covers everything that pertains to life and Godliness, and we, according to him, are holy and without sin, Hard to believe? Yes, I know! I am still taking it in too.
I often put my actions before the blessing and make God a liar; every time I do an act that collides with the God-given values, I run into hiding; I seek the blessing once more. Sometimes I harbour in hiding for a while.
But if Isaac did not claim back Jacob’s blessing, how can God who sent His beloved son to die for us claim back his blessings when we act other wards?
What I know for sure sin cannot affect our Spiritual blessing. Still, Luke 6: 38 says, “for with the same measure that you use it will be measured back to you” we see Laban Jacob’s Father in law being deceptive to him and making him serve to marry Rachel, her young daughter, but he instead gives him Leah his first daughter.
In the same way, when we sin like stealing or even practising adultery, we shall face the consequences like cutting our lives short when other people’s wives with whom we cheat kill us or even face jail for the rest of our lives. However, still, God counts us Holy and his beloved because he cast that blessing on us and not even our shady character can change that!
Even as we go about this life, let us rest in the assurance of our Father’s blessing and love, He correctly sealed it for us, and nothing can change that.
Wow! This just blessed me. Thanks Viv
